Winter Strains

God of all generations,
in silence I hear your voice
echoing forth from deepest recesses
where flesh dances with spirit
and is suckled by mysteries divine.

It awakens in me a familiar longing–
a hunger for rest and peace
and refuge from angry, counter winds
that shake and rattle an aging heart
still struggling to be free.

And in night’s pause, yet I am courted
by promise of fire and light,
by treasure eager to be discovered
as gift for those who seek your love,
as love you gift to all.

It is the season, now, for deepest truths;
for surrendering fancy and fad;
for transcending hurts that bind and smother;
and listening carefully above the din
for the song that leads me home,
the timeless song of home.

Abraham’s Mountain #2

If we choose to undertake
that spiritual journey toward complete love and union
we will surely be summoned to Abraham’s Mountain,
to that place of nakedness and deep inner willingness
to surrender absolutely all to the unrelenting call
of the Divine Presence within.

Collecting “Likes”

If I write only
to collect “likes” and “follows”
I may unknowingly dam up
the free flow of those creative waters
meant to be turned into wine
to help the world sing
its stunning, vibrant song.

Ambivalent Feelings

Frameless and transient,
ambivalent feelings
rise in me like puffs of smoke,
mercilessly vulnerable
to the wiles and whims
of ever-changing winds.
Aching from the gnawing
of indecision today, I turn
to the still waters
within that suffer neither
coercion nor pretense,
longing for direction
but knowing I must
surrender even that
to the sacred work
of silence.

A Fire Inside

The truth
of who you are
is a fire inside
ignited and fueled
by the Mystery of Love.
Do you yearn
to feel the heat
and its power
to transform?
Learn to be still and
silent. Do you long
to divine your callings
and paths? Learn
to listen and wait.
And in your yearning
do not turn from
your wounds and fears
but dare to suffer them
as you surrender
all to the fire that
longs to burn brightly
as a torch blazing
the wholeness of you.

Kindness

May your kindness never
be a soulless reflection
of guilt, obligation, cultural
pressure, or desire to play
the favored, superior one.
Rather, may it be a fresh,
balmy fragrance silently rising
from a gentle and generous heart
deeply rooted in the lavish
garden of gratuitous grace
to anoint as holy the very air
we all breathe.
