Every Day

Every day,
have it in your mind
to love at least
one person unconditionally;
or to be present
to one moment wholly;
or to empty your ego-self
in one situation entirely.
Do this daily, and in time
you will come to recognize
the reality of your divine roots.

This Thing Called Grace

You need this,
she said unexpectedly,
peering into my troubled eyes,
this woman, this casual acquaintance,
apparently aware of my circumstance,
the one which had been draining,
straining, and mercilessly
maiming me.
The days ground on
and her words kept rattling,
reverberating in my abused brain
like the endless taunts
of a childhood bully.
But as I continued
to encounter “my circumstance,”
these “taunts” gradually morphed into a mantra
and letting go became a little easier each day,
sleep a little sounder,
and I began to understand
surrender as if for the first time
and to celebrate anew this mystery,
this thing called grace.

…it’s killing you.

Deep in the night
the Spirit said to me:

Stop it! Just stop it!
Stop having to be right,
to be on top,
to be in control.
Stop trying
to have more things,
newer gadgets,
grander vacations,
and bigger houses.
Stop trying to please,
to be accepted,
to be respected,
and loved by all.
And for heaven’s sake,
stop trying to put me
in your back pocket.
I can give you
lots of reasons why
I’m telling you this,
but for tonight
I will only say this:
what you are doing
is insanity and
it’s killing you.

Death

When I was young,
I staunchly avoided
every sideways glance
Death threw my way.
Now that I am old,
I dare return even
those piercing stares
from Death’s deep, dark eyes,
trusting now that compassion,
in truth, rules the day.
