Spiritual Markers

Here, in a somewhat ordered fashion, are the relevant insights and interpretations that, linked together, give some coherence to the free flowing thoughts and musings chronicled in this blog. These statements do not specifically reference any traditional religious belief system and are certainly not meant to be prescriptive for all.

  • A deeper way of living the moments and stages of our lives often begins with a wonder at and appreciation for creation and our participation in the Mystery of Being.
  • Movement into this wonder and appreciation is generally preceded by a feeling of dissatisfaction with our usual vision of our life or an insight or experience of “something more” that prods us to ask new questions about meaning and purpose.
  • In time we may eventually discover an intimate link with that “something more” in the ordinary experiences and moments of our day-to-day life.
  • But there is inconsistency in our appreciation for the moment, barriers within ourselves to the freedom of being that we sense can be ours.
  • There are burdens that weigh us down.
  • Much of this sense of heaviness and blockage comes not from life itself but our reaction to it.
  • An active player strongly influencing this reaction is the self-serving ego.
  • The ego is necessary to make our way in this world but all too often it overplays its hand and becomes obsessed with self-aggrandizement, control, recognition, security, etc.
  • This can close us to the “other” and the creative possibilities of the moment, occupying us with regretting or glorifying the past, worrying or fantasizing about the future.
  • It can also set up expectations for us that life and people must conform to our wants and needs and is greatly disturbed when they don’t.
  • Fighting these movements of the ego head-on only seems to strengthen the ego’s tendency to resist.
  • A coming to an awareness and humble admission of the ego’s specific manipulations in our everyday life gives us insight and energy to let go and move beyond ego-based living.
  • Intuition and inspiration are often more reliable than thinking in guiding us on this path of growth.
  • Acceptance of the truth of the moment and surrender to the ever creative divine reality within are two of our most potent allies. This is especially true in the face of suffering of any kind.
  • Surrender will almost certainly include courageously facing up to the suffering that comes from the letting go of the limiting illusions of the self-centered ego.
  • Becoming aware of the restrictions the ego places on our experience of life is a continuous, never-ending challenge, but the reward is movement toward a richer, more fulfilling life.
  • That richer life equals an ever more expansive opening into the workings of Love in ourselves and in our relationships.
  • And it is Love that gives us the clearest vision of our origin and our participation in the Mystery of Being, the “Isness” that most name God.
  • And it’s Love that transforms a life and its relationships into a spiritual work of art, created, not through an obsessive need to do more activities or buy more “things,” but through a giving of our full presence to simply being with, listening, delighting in, touching, looking, responding to, sharing spontaneous laughter and tears.
