Filtered Presence

The more your presence
is rigidly filtered
through a screen
of familial and cultural
norms, standards,
expectations and demands,
the less you will be able
to be a listening,
healing presence
for the world.

Ambivalent Feelings

Frameless and transient,
ambivalent feelings
rise in me like puffs of smoke,
mercilessly vulnerable
to the wiles and whims
of ever-changing winds.
Aching from the gnawing
of indecision today, I turn
to the still waters
within that suffer neither
coercion nor pretense,
longing for direction
but knowing I must
surrender even that
to the sacred work
of silence.

Suffering

In these later years I’ve tried
for a transparent relationship
with suffering—
surely I don’t desire it
nor do I yet fully accept it
but for now at least
I make an effort
to ride with it
without passing it on
to all who share my space.
