Suffering

In these later years I’ve tried
for a transparent relationship
with suffering—
surely I don’t desire it
nor do I yet fully accept it
but for now at least
I make an effort
to ride with it
without passing it on
to all who share my space.

Self-Awareness

Do not confuse
self-criticism with self-awareness.
They both may dare to engage the shadow,
but the former, if not tempered by love,
may fuel guilt and self-loathing.
The latter, a child of grace,
aids in our enlightenment
and the birth of compassion
for ourselves and others.

Doubts

We wear our doubts
about our worth
like a heavy back pack
of unsympathetic stones
forcing us to bend body and soul
to balance the burden of its weight
as we press forward to carry on.

So used to this merciless load
do we become that we forget
we were not born with it
and that it’s possible
to undo the bindings
and lay it down
at the sacred altar
of God’s love.

Addiction

How quick I am to name, sometimes,
the addictions of family and neighbors,
not always from concern or love, I admit,
but often from my own addiction
to feeling superior and favored.
