Grocery Shopping with God

Grocery shopping,
a job I detested for years,
became a favorite spiritual practice
from the day I first chose
to consciously call to mind
awareness of God’s Presence within—
right there in the aisles
of boxes, cans, produce,
meats, bakery,
other shoppers,
and check-out lines.

  1. I’ve found waiting in grocery lines a fertile place for encountering God’s presence well. Once I watched an old woman who looked like she was worn down by life break into a smile that lit up her face like the sun breaking through. I smiled back.
